Bariloche is a town at kilometre zero and a 25-kilometre lakeside road, and almost nothing you came for is at kilometre zero. Behind the chocolate shops and the stone civic centre, Avenida Bustillo runs west along Nahuel Huapi past Cerro Campanario at km 17.5 and out to Llao Llao at km 25, where the boats leave. Further out again there is a volcano with three summits, a national park the size of a small country, and a gravel road that only lets you up it between half past ten and two.

That last part is the thing nobody tells you, and it reorganises everything. Bariloche runs on timetables rather than distances — the Tronador road is one-way by the hour, Cerro Catedral opens in pieces depending on what fell that week, and the weather votes daily. So you don't book the week. You book the base, you keep the days loose, and you decide at breakfast. Which is a lot easier when eight of you are in one house with a parrilla out the back and nobody is fronting money for a plan that might not happen.

Ten percent in restaurants, in cash where you can, because card tips often don't reach the people who earned them. Round up for taxis and remises. Tip the driver who spent the day getting eight of you up a gravel road and back down inside the one window the road allows.

Safety

The mountain is the risk, and the mechanism for handling it is free: the Nahuel Huapi Registro de Trekking is obligatory and costs nothing, and you complete it online before you start walking. Almost nobody does. Weather here turns inside an hour, Catedral and the Frey basin are avalanche terrain in winter, and the 2026 season opened thin and late.

The other one worth knowing calmly: hantavirus is a real Patagonian thing and almost entirely a question of where you sleep. Argentina recorded 106 confirmed cases in the 2025/26 season. An urban Bariloche week carries effectively no risk; rural cabins and mountain refuges carry it, and autumn is the peak as rodents move indoors. Air a cabin out for a few hours before you settle in, never dry-sweep a rural room, keep food sealed. Fever over 38 °C with muscle aches one to six weeks after a rural stay, especially with breathlessness, is a same-day trip to a hospital.

SIM card

Buy a Personal, Claro or Movistar SIM with your passport in the centro; it takes minutes and coverage is solid along the whole Bustillo axis out to Llao Llao. It thins fast once you turn off towards Tronador, and there is none at all past Pampa Linda — which matters, because that road runs on a timetable you cannot check from the road.
